Which adhesive?

Hotmelt adhesive is solvent-free and gives a strong initial grab, the usual choice for sealing boxes quickly. Natural rubber gives a strong instant grab on cardboard and suits cartons and frame backs. Solvent adhesive sticks to itself, so strips can be layered, and copes better with temperature extremes. All three are self-adhesive: no water needed.

Tape for fragile parcels

The printed ‘FRAGILE HANDLE ME WITH CARE’ tape seals light to medium cartons and labels them for careful handling at the same time, for ceramics, glass, prints and electronics.

Dispensers and tape guns

The 48mm rolls fit standard tape dispensers. The 75mm roll needs a 75mm-capable dispenser. For water-activated tape, see our gummed tape dispensers.

Paper tape or gummed tape?

Self-adhesive paper tape is quick and needs no equipment. Gummed paper tape needs water but bonds into the box for a tamper-evident seal, and suits benches that seal boxes all day.

Recycling

Paper tape is kraft paper with an adhesive, so a box sealed with it can usually go in household cardboard recycling where kerbside collections accept cardboard. Check your local council’s guidance.
