What is hotmelt adhesive

  • Hot-melt adhesives, also known as hot glue, are solvent-free, thermoplastic materials that are supplied in a solid chicklet, or block form, and applied in the molten state at temperatures varying from 120°C to 180°C / 250F to 350F.

There exists a versatile line of hot melt adhesives from product assembly to food packaging. Hot-melt adhesives applications are as numerous as they are diverse. In general, hot melts are applied by extruding, rolling or spraying, and the high melt stickiness makes them ideal for porous and permeable substances. Hot melt adhesives are capable of bonding an array of different substrates including: rubbers, ceramics, metals, plastics, glass and wood. They can be used in many applications such as the following:

  • Profile-wrapping, product assembly and laminating applications in the woodworking industry
  • Larger applications of HMA traditionally use pneumatic systems to supply adhesive
  • Many electronic device manufacturers to affix parts and wires. or to secure, insulate, and protect the device’s components
  • Spine gluing in the bookbingding industry
  • Closing the flaps of corrugated boxes and paperboard cartons in the packaging industry
  • In all types of tapes use in postal packaging
  • Disposable diapers are constructed to bond the non-woven material to both the backsheet and the elastics
There are several types of hot-melt adhesives which are listed below

  • Action: bond fast, does not require drying process, continuous, automatic high speed operation, high efficiency, and low cost.
  • Physical characteristics: pollution-environmentally friendly, solvent-free, flame retardant.
  • Packaging transport and storage: the product itself is a solid packaging, transport, storage, covering an area of small, convenient storage.
  • Performance: good adhesion strength, flexibility.
  • User: bonded objects extensively, the bonding and sealing.
  • Appearance: shiny and bright remain good, with good shielding.


  • Limited in performance, heat resistance is not enough (high temperature resistant hot melt Adhesive), high bonding strength, corrosion resistance is bad.
  • To be equipped with a special hot-melt equipment to construction, such as hot-melt adhesives, hot-melt glue gun.
  • Greatly influenced by temperature differences.
